Memorandum to MEC for Health

The Honourable, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, Minister of Health

Your Excellency,

We, the Catholics of Johannesburg, submit to you this memorandum, which expresses our following deep concerns regarding our country’s ‘Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act’ (hereafter referred to as the ‘Choice Act’) which legalises abortion on demand. In particular we wish to again draw your excellency’s attention to the following facts which we stated in our previous memorandum to yourself, dated 13th March, 2010.

1. It is an irrefutable scientific fact that human life commences with conception and it is the teaching of the Catholic Church that human life must be legally protected from its beginning until natural death.

2.The most fundamental human right is the right to life. The ‘Choice on Termination of Pregnancy Act’ denies this right to the child in the mother’s womb. This is a direct attack on the dignity of the human person and effectively treats a certain group of persons (pre-born children) as having fewer rights than any other group of persons. This is a new “apartheid” and a new “holocaust” aimed at those so weak that they are denied even the opportunity to develop a voice to raise against their oppression.

3. Since the passing of the ‘Choice Act’ at least 931,248 children (Government Statistics up to 31st December, 2010) have been denied the right to life, due to legal surgical abortions. (This does not take into account the unlimited deaths of babies due to the escalation of “backstreet” abortions in our country’s abortion industry.)

4. Even though nine out of ten South Africans consider abortion ‘wrong’ (HSRC Review, Volume 6, No.1, March 2008) our parliament has seen fit to pass a law legalising abortion. Parliamentarians and government officials therefore bear the responsibility before God and the people for this law.

In addition to the above mentioned concerns, we wish to record our dismay at the imminent implementation by the government of the concept known as “medical termination of pregnancy” in our country’s health care facilities. This concept will introduce the chemical termination of pregnancies up to 56 days in duration, to supplement the present surgical legalized abortions. Due to the ease with which this concept can be utilized, it will increase dramatically the number of legalized abortions which take place in our country every year.

Notwithstanding our above deep concerns, we have been encouraged by a recent press report made by your excellency in an address to the ‘National Nursing Summit’ in Johannesburg. These statements indicated a concern by your excellency about the concept of legal abortions in general, especially regarding its utilization as a method of birth control. If these statements indicate a narrowing of the opinion gap on legalized abortion between the government and a large section of our population, this is greatly to be welcomed in the interests of national unity. A logical sequence hereto would be a national referendum as to whether the ‘Choice Act’ should be drastically curtailed or discontinued to exist at all.

In conclusion, we respectfully petition our President that the aforesaid ‘Choice Act’ be repealed by our parliament as soon as possible.

We offer your Excellency our prayers and best wishes.

Archdiocesan Right to Life Holy Mass and Rally, 26th March, 2011

Archbishop Buti Thlagale concelebrated Holy Mass with 12 priests and a deacon at the Cathedral of Christ the King on Saturday, 26th March. This was preceded by the rosary for life and followed by a numbers of speakers.

A couple shared their very moving account of the abortion they had before they were married (at 17 years of age), the pain and destruction they experienced in the subsequent marriage, the effects on their other children and their eventual return to the church and healing through the Divine Mercy.
Bongiwe Khumalo and other representatives from the Archdiocesan Youth Department followed with their input and poetry.
Rachel More, Deputy Minister of Culture and Art and National President of the Catholic Women’s Association, presented her well researched talk on abortion. Her graphic descriptions and moving letters from the unborn and the post abortive parent left the congregation with a clear picture of the reality of abortion.
Shelley Joseph gave a power point presentation showing the development of the unborn from conception to birth, graphic pictures of the various procedures used for abortion and the work of the Culture of Life Campaign inviting the congregation to become involved where they are able.
Finally Damian Mcleish gave a short input on what is called contraception, but in reality is chemically induced abortion.
The morning ended with benediction, before the congregation visited the hall where a display of interest tables was available for more information and the opportunity to sign up and get involved in the various aspects of the culture of life.
The committee extend their heartfelt appreciation to all who gave of their time and talents to make the occasion the success it was.
P.S. The archbishop’s homily will be made available in due time.

Mammograms? What mammograms? New video exposes Planned Parenthood false claim

While Cecile Richards of Planned Parenthood has claimed that the abortion
giant provides mammograms, undercover calls to 30 clinics prove otherwise.

BY Peter Smith

WASHINGTON, D.C., March 30, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – A new Live Action
sting operation on Planned Parenthood clinics across the country belies
statements by Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards and Planned
Parenthood allies that cutting funding to the abortion giant would limit
women’s access to health care services including mammograms.

“If this bill ever becomes law, millions of women in this country are
gonna lose their health care access – not to abortion services – to basic
family planning, you know, mammograms,” Richards said on The Joy Behar
Show in February, referring to the House bill that includes the cuts to
Planned Parenthood’s funding.

To verify this claim, undercover journalists with Live Action made calls to
30 Planned Parenthood clinics in 27 different states, inquiring about the
availability of mammograms. In every case, the actress was turned down and
told to go elsewhere for the procedure, which helps detect breast cancer. A
Youtube video of the calls is available here.

“For so long PP has touted that they are a provider of mammogram
services.  This is just one of the lies that PP uses to draw people into
their clinics,” said former Planned Parenthood Director Abby Johnson.
“[Planned Parenthood] is not able to provide quality services on their
own, so they are forced to lie to the public about services they don’t
provide — and mammograms are just one of those services.”

One staff member at a Planned Parenthood in Arizona told Live Action when
asked about the availability of mammograms: “We don’t provide those
services whatsoever.”

Another individual at Planned Parenthood’s Comprehensive Health Center
clinic in Overland Park, Kansas explained, “We actually don’t have a,
um, mammogram machine, at our clinics.”

The calls recorded by Live Action follow their recent undercover video
stings showing Planned Parenthood staff, including management, apparently
willing to turn a blind eye to sex-trafficking of young girls at seven
clinics in four different states. Previous video stings have caught staffers
on video showing an indifference to statutory child rape and failing to
report to authorities that a minor teenage girl seeking abortion is being
sexually abused by a much older man.

“Planned Parenthood is first and foremost an abortion business, but
Planned Parenthood and its allies will say almost anything to try and cover
up that fact and preserve its taxpayer funding,” said Live Action
president Lila Rose. “It’s not surprising that an organization found
concealing statutory rape and helping child sex traffickers would
misrepresent its own services so brazenly, playing on women’s fears in
order to protect their tax dollars.”

Last year, Planned Parenthood received $363 million in federal dollars.

Pope exhorts health care workers to promote culture of life

“I hope that everyone will work to make the culture of life grow, to put the
value of the human being at the center in every circumstance,” said the
pope.

BY Rebecca Millette

VATICAN CITY, February 7, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Pope Benedict XVI
urged health care workers to uphold and promote life in an short address
before the Sunday Angelus yesterday.  “It is my wish that the new
generations of health workers are the bearers of a renewed culture of
life,” said the pope.

The pope recalled that this Friday, February 11th, is the World Day of the
Sick.

“Thus I exhort all health workers to see in the sick person not only a
body marked by fragility, but first of all a person, to whom complete
solidarity must be extended and adequate and competent responses given,”
he said.

The pope greeted the delegations of medical and surgical departments who
were gathered for a conference on the topic of health assistance during
pregnancy.

“When scientific and technological research are guided by authentic
ethical values it is possible to find adequate solutions for the welcoming
of nascent life and the promotion of maternity,” he affirmed.

“I hope that everyone will work to make the culture of life grow, to put
the value of the human being at the center in every circumstance …
According to faith and reason the dignity of the person is irreducible to
his faculties or the capacities he can manifest, and so it is not lessened
when the person himself is weak, handicapped and in need of help.”
